Claim denied. Prescription not covered. Care provider out of network. This book is for
anyone who has heard these words, been a patient or watched a loved one battle the
American medical system to get the care they need. Written by a practicing physician,
“American Medicine Mismanaged Care” describes the problems with health care from the
perspective of doctors and their patients. It proposes a simple and efficient solution for
working within the existing system. Different from its business or legal counterparts, this
book attempts to explore a transformation of the healthcare system that makes sense for
the ones it’s designed to serve: patients and their physicians.
Historically, doctors have been responsible first and foremost to their patients. Dr. Multz
offers dozens of anecdotes showing how in today’s care environment the physicians must
respond first to the insurance company. This is what Multz labels a “hassle factor,” which is
any obstacle to quality care, quality practice, or quality of life. From the HMO to the
pharmaceutical company, he takes an in-depth look at the failures of managed care which
become obstacles between patients and the best possible medical care.
The system isn’t working. Dr. Multz calls for an all around simplification. He proposes that
healthcare decisions be returned to physicians and their patients. In his words, his proposal
“doesn’t redesign the wheel, it just realigns it.” This easy-to-follow prescription for change
is clear and to the point. Multz uses personal experience to illustrate how the current
system wastes money and wastes physicians’ and patients’ time. He effectively removes
healthcare reform from the campaign stump and returns it to the American kitchen table.
Carter Multz, MD, practices medicine in San Jose, CA. His 45 years of private practice
afford a unique insight into the inner workings of the healthcare industry. Dr. Multz received
the Mendel Award at Gonzaga University, and is listed in the “Best Doctors in San Jose,”
and “Who’s Who in America.”
